Paul Draper's Mysteries of the Mind Newsletter
"I'm a great believer in luck and I find the harder I work, the more I have of it."
-
Thomas Jefferson (Third President of the United States)

Welcome to March's "Mysteries of the Mind" monthly newsletter!

4 leaf clovers, lucky rabbits' feet, horseshoes, charms, amulets, lucky number 7--in America, 8 in China--and pots of gold at the end of rainbows!

It is the month of March, St. Patrick's Day, and lots of good luck!

So what does it take to be "lucky?"

"A ten-year scientific study into the nature of luck has revealed that, to a large extent, people make their own good and bad fortune. The results also show that it is possible to enhance the amount of luck that people encounter in their lives."
- Skeptical Inquirer

Psychologist Richard Wiseman at the University of Hertfordshire (in the UK) recently published his study on luck and the four key factors that he believes can help us all to live luckier lives! His research revealed that lucky people generate their own good fortune via the four basic principles listed below:

Lucky people:

  1. Are skilled at creating and noticing chance opportunities.
  2. Make lucky decisions by listening to their intuition.
  3. Create self-fulfilling prophesies via positive expectations, and
  4. Adopt a resilient attitude that transforms bad luck into good.

This study along with others like it may be tools that help us choose to live luckier lives.

Stanford psychologist Alfred Bandura in a separate study recently discussed the impact of chance encounters and luck on people’s lives. Bandura noted both the importance and prevalence of such encounters, writing that some of the most important determinants of life paths often arise through the most trivial of circumstances.

So is it possible to simply decide to run across wonderful opportunities every day? I say yes! All we have to do is make sure to be in the right place at the right time.

But how can we accomplish that? By being in right places all of the time! -And while we are there, noticing opportunities following our gut feelings, having positive expectations, and keeping an optimistic perspective when working through difficult times.

"I say luck is when an opportunity comes along, and you're prepared for it."
-Denzel Washington

"Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity."
-Seneca (5BC - 65BCE)

So go out and break a mirror, walk under a ladder, or buy a black cat that will constantly cross your path. Just start each day knowing that you are lucky, and use that passion to look for opportunities that will make your world better every day!

Lucky Songs

"Shallow men believe in luck. Strong men believe in cause and effect. Good luck is another name for tenacity of purpose."
-Ralph Waldo Emerson

This week I offer you three fun songs about luck! These three artists have three passionately different ways of expressing and presenting the idea of luck and what it means to be lucky.

Brando pleads for a supernatural and very feminine ideal of luck to step in and help him in his difficult time. Britney sings and questions everything about the power of luck and what it truly means to be lucky. Elvis sweetly sings to his romantic interest in the style of a classical love song, professing that she is his lucky charm above all else. Enjoy!

Correction
In last month’s Mental Mysteries, the news item regarding award nominations for the Magic Castle contained an error and should have read, "I am honored to be eligible for nomination for the third time in a row for awards at the World Famous Magic Castle." I regret the misstep and offer thanks to members of the Board of Trustees for their prompt clarification.
